Leaving home in Britain

Project presentations on leaving home at the universities of Groningen and Tilburg

This week R Coulter has presented ongoing project research on the dynamics of leaving home to seminars at the universities of Groningen (24/11/16) and Tilburg (25/11/16).

This work seeks to understand how parents and local house prices influence (1) the timing of home-leaving as well as (2) the household routes young people take out of the parental home. Preliminary findings indicate that parents have a strong impact on transitions to live alone, but relatively little impact on exits to partnership. Higher local house prices also seem to reduce the likelihood of leaving home, especially to live without a partner.
